Length
of Internships Determined by Students
Interns
can start and end their internships whenever they like. The
individual simply writes on the application form when he or
she would like to start and end. Then the One-World Washington
Internship Program finds a position that falls within that
timeframe. Although internships need not last for any minimal
length of time, no American has ever requested a placement
for less than a month, and most international students want
jobs that last at least a few months. Six months to a year
constitutes the most popular length of time for students from
abroad. The maximal amount of time that students are permitted
to stay in the United States on a J1 visa is eighteen months.
Therefore, no international interns come to Washington for
longer than a year and-a-half. If an intern decides to shorten
the internship once he or she is working in Washington, that
change can be accommodated. The tuition for the Washington
Internship Program is not affected by the length of time a
student requests. Interns who work for a year pay no more
in tuition than ones who come for just a semester.
